For the 2001 v8 supercars shell championship series season, Marcus Ambrose was signed by stone brothers racing to drive a ford au falcon. Ambrose immediately stunned the supercars championship world when he qualified on pole position on debut, at the Australian grand prix support race. He qualified on pole position again at round 3 eastern creek and round 9 at Queensland raceway. He also went on to qualify for pole position for the 2001 bathurst 1000, where he became the first rookie to take pole position since 1987 with a laptime of 2:09.7785.
For the great race the Marcus Ambrose/Wayne Wakefield #4 Pertek/stone brothers racing entry had a disasterious start and fell quickly to 5th place on the opening lap. Slowly falling away from the leading group by lap 10, the Ambrose/Wakefield AU Falcon was in 13th place where they constantly stayed until pitting on lap 29. They regained the field in 31st place and worked their way up gradually through the field to 26th place-where on lap 42-their Ford AU Falcon circumed to fuel injection system failure and had to retire from the race prematurley. After a disappointing bathurst full of unfulfilled expectations, Ambrose was able to resurrect his season and went on to finish 8th overasll in 2001 and also won the rookie of the year award.
